Beading Supplies
Beading can help transform any dull looking article into the most wonderful things. Some of the items that have often been transformed completely through beading are a pen, pencil, perfume applicator, fan pull, bookmark, necklace perfume applicator, key chain, letter opener, roller ball pen and magnifying glass. The pen, pencil, letter opener and glass would make a perfect Holiday gift for someone who doesn't wear beaded jewelry. But in order to create attractive pieces it is important to have the perfect quality of beading supplies. Bead supplies and tools might just add up to major purchases. When you are purchasing your beading supplies make sure that you get a good lamp. A bright desk lamp or magnifying light will make it easier to identify patterns, textures and other identifiable markings on any bead. Also use the jeweler's loupe or magnifying glass that will help you see specific details close up. While I am way more into needlepoint and embroidery, and since my beading experience is practically as pitiful as my knowledge of beading supplies is, I had the fortunate experience of working on a piece that called for said beading supplies. In other words, I got an instant lesson or two.
The beading supplies in you tool box contents differ, depending on what kind of beading you plan to do. Off-loom beading: beading needles, extra-long beading needles, small scissors, thread conditioner (Thread Heaven or bees wax), plastic trays or small containers for holding beads that are in the process of being used, an emery board, and clear nail polish for sealing knots, a pair of needle-nose pliers (for pulling a needle through a tight bead) and wire cutters, in case you need to break a bead in the middle of your piece. Sometimes a LOT is too much…and not nearly enough. Of probably five- to ten-thousand dollars’ worth of bead supplies, I came away with five dollars’ worth of the right beads. Invest in good jewelry findings and beading supplies before starting to make your own jewelry. A good set of tools, including pliers and a wide range of threads and wires will give you the breadth of material you need to be as creative as you want! You do need to maintain your tools and materials if you want them to last. Remember that beading supplies should only be used for jewelry making and beading.
